Children in a child care centre listening to a storyMay is Childcare Month and CUPE BC is celebrating the incredible contribution child care workers make in our communities. In the coming days, CUPE members who provide high quality child care throughout the province will be profiled on social media as a way to recognize the incredible work of members in this sector.

Child care is one of the many services delivered by CUPE members that communities rely on. High quality childcare ensures kids get a strong foundation for their learning and social development, and produces positive outcomes to families. Access to childcare has a proven positive effect on women accessing the workforce, which leads to a more just and equitable society.

Simply celebrating childcare, and those who work in the existing fractured and mostly private system, is not enough. More child care spaces are needed in communities across the province, and workers in the sector need fair wages, access to benefits and a pension, and better job security.

That is why CUPE BC launched its campaign for a public universal system of child care in British Columbia – Public Childcare Now. Publicly delivered child care ensures quality, convenience, and reliability for kids and families, and means sustainable jobs that will allow our province to attract and retain the childcare professionals we need.

Please join CUPE BC in thanking child care workers for the passion they bring to their work and learn more about our campaign to build the best possible system of child care for British Columbians. Take action today by visiting publicchildcarenow.ca, and let decision-makers know you support bringing childcare into B.C.’s public schools.

Together we can build the public childcare that kids, families and communities need.
