Victoria Day Care workers, fed up after nearly eight months on strike, occupied the city hall office of Toronto mayor Mel Lastman January 23.

The thirteen women, members of CUPE Local 2563, pressed the mayor to intervene to end the strike. The bulk of the centres funding comes from the municipality through the purchase of child care spaces. The strikers believe the city has a duty to assure that public dollars are properly spent and that workers at agencies receiving municipal dollars are treated fairly.

The workers went on strike in June after the centres board took money allocated for the employee pension plan to fund day-to-day operations.

The protracted strike has caused severe hardship for the 25 child care workers.
