This week, CBC Radios The Current aired a special series about the selling-off of the worlds water system. Called Water for Profit: How Multinationals Are Taking Control of a Public Resource, the series included documentaries about:

  • The corporate scandal that happened when Hamilton privatized its water system
  • How a $500-million water contract in Atlanta, Georgia left the city soaked
  • How the World Bank encourages poor countries to privatize their water systems
  • How the water taps are being turned off to millions of South Africans because they cant afford to pay

CUPE is at the forefront of fighting for strong public water systems not just in Canada, but around the world. Last spring, a CUPE delegation attended the World Water Forum in Japan. Just a couple of months ago, CUPE was instrumental in stopping a major multinational from buying Halifaxs water system.
