OTTAWA – Locked-out cleaners at the Carlingwood Mall, represented by Local 4266.06 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will set up picket lines at the Carlingwood Mall beginning tomorrow (Thursday, October 31st) at 1:00 p.m. The cleaners were effectively locked out without notice on Monday, October 21st when low-wage replacement workers were brought in to do their work.

This week’s picket schedule is Thursday, October 31st, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, November 1st, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 2nd, 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

“We will do everything we can to get our jobs back,” says Ra006c Shank, CUPE 4266.06 spokesperson. “We have not been treated fairly and we will be inviting people to shop elsewhere until Carlingwood Mall reverses this injustice.”

“We have asked other CUPE members in the Ottawa area to boycott the Carlingwood Mall until these workers obtain justice,” says CUPE National Representative Andy Mele. “We are reaching out to area residents as well because we believe when they hear how these workers are being let go without notice just in time for the holiday season, they will want to shop elsewhere until Carlingwood Mall does the right thing.”

CUPE, Canada’s largest union, represents over half a million workers across Canada, including 15,000 in Ottawa.
