Edmonton – Across Alberta CUPE members will be joining thousands of health care workers today in noon hour protests against Bill 27.

CUPE members in Lethbridge, Strathmore, Calgary, Edmonton and Athabasca will join members of the United Nurses of Alberta and Health Sciences Association of Alberta as they take a variety of actions to demonstrate their anger over the loss of collective bargaining rights.

“There is nothing in this legislation that will improve Albertans’ health care. On the contrary, its goal is to weaken the job security and undercut the wages of health care workers,” said CUPE Alberta President Bruce McLeod.

Yesterday, the government released the regulations that accompany Bill 27 and go into effect today. “The regulations confirm our worst fears. They give enormous powers to the chair of the Alberta Labour Relations Board to determine collective agreements for all health care workers. This draconian move is absolutely unprecedented in this province,” said McLeod.

In Lethbridge, members of CUPE 408 will join the United Nurses of Alberta with a noon hour protest at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital. In Strathmore, members of CUPE 4484 and CUPE 2340 will stage a demonstration at the Strathmore Hospital and will be joined by the United Nurses of Alberta and the Health Sciences Association of Alberta.

In Calgary, CUPE 182 members at Rockyview, Colonel Belcher and the Peter Lougheed Centre will be wearing black ribbons, as will the members of CUPE 1157 at the Athabasca Healthcare Centre. The ribbons are symbolic of the loss of democratic rights contained in Bill 27. The Calgary health care workers will continue to wear the ribbons throughout the week.

In Edmonton, CUPE 41 members will be releasing black helium balloons at 11:30 at the Grey Nuns Hospital and at the Misericordia Hospital the members of CUPE 2111 will take the “lunch on the line” to speak out against Bill 27.
