CROUPIERS TO TAKE A STRIKE VOTE

Montra006c, Thursday, September 19, 2002 - With bargaining now at an impasse, the leaders of the croupiers’ union at the Montra006c Casino will be asking their members to take a strike vote. The vote will be held on Tuesday, September 24 during a general meeting of some 850 croupiers from Montra006c, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). The resolution will call for “the introduction of pressure tactics as far as a general strike”.

After a dozen meetings, bargaining, which commenced in June, has led nowhere. The principal points at issue concern training, holidays, occupational illnesses and wages, including tips. The collective agreement will expire on December 31 of this year. If a strike is to affect the activities at the Casino, it cannot be called until January 1.

In addition to the 850 croupiers at the Montra006c Casino, CUPE represents as many employees at the Casino in Hull, including support and security staff and surveillance technicians.

In all, CUPE represents some 4,000 members in government corporations and public organizations in Qub0065c. In addition to this sector, CUPE is also active in 10 other sectors of activity, including health and social services, communications, universities, education, municipalities, hydroelectricity, and urban and air transport. With close to 100,000 members in Qub0065c, it is the largest FTQ affiliate.
