Three large murals painted on Toronto garbage trucks were unveiled Monday as the Garbage Collection Project, a 10-month collaboration of three artists and CUPE Local 416 environmental workers.

“The murals on the trucks are an innovative form of mobile billboard so promote clean cities,
environmental awareness and alliance building,” said CUPE Local 1281’s Min Sook
Lee, a well-known cultural animator who worked on the project.

Artists Barbara
Klunder, Grace Channer, and Sady Ducros provided the art. The Toronto Environmental Alliance and York
University professor Deb Barndt also assisted with the project.

Project sponsors
include the City of Toronto works department, CUPE, CUPE Ontario, CUPE Toronto
district council, Metro Labour Education Centre and the Laidlaw Foundation.
