Human Rights in the time of COVID: Organizing for Change

Time is running out to register for CUPE’s virtual Human Rights Conference, “Human Rights in the Time of COVID: Organizing for Change”. The conference will take place online March 1 – 4, 2021, noon to 4 pm Eastern Time. All registration closes end of day February 19, 2021 – please note this is a firm cut off to allow sufficient time to plan the conference technology. We will not be able to accommodate any registration requests after this date. When your registration is confirmed, you will receive an email to sign up for caucuses, a cultural event, and a workshop. Make sure to sign up for all the caucuses you’d like to attend on Caucus Day (Wednesday, March 3). Caucuses are open to all members who self-identify. If you’re a worker under 30, make sure to sign up for the new Young Workers caucus! Please also let us know if you will be attending the artivism cultural event on Tuesday, March 2 at 4:00 pm.

Abusive use of a camera and difficult labour relations in long-term care

CUPE 3247, the largest union in the integrated health and social services centre of Montérégie-Ouest, deplores an incident involving abusive use of camera surveillance. In a period of very difficult labour relations, the local discovered that a camera had been installed, for no valid reason and therefore illegally, in the office of maintenance workers in a long-term care facility.

Peer harm reduction workers vote unanimously to join CUPE 1004

The representation vote held on March 9, 2020 by “Peer” harm reduction workers employed by the Portland Hotel Society (PHS) was finally counted, and the workers voted unanimously to join CUPE 1004. Peer workers at Insite, Washington Needle Depot, iOAT and overdose prevention sites in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside are instrumental in saving lives in the face of British Columbia’s overdose public health emergency. Peers are employees with lived experience, similar to that of the participants and residents they serve.
