On November 3, 4, and 5, 2003, we received the results of seven (7) separate regional health care support workers votes. The results were very disappointing as we lost all the votes and a total of 6,200 members.

Notwithstanding the tireless efforts of our local union activists and CUPE staff we seemed to hold our level of support but could not attract support from the members of competing unions.

Brother Claude and I have written to the locals directly affected by these votes. We thanked our activists and members for their contribution to CUPE over the years. We also wrote to all other CUPE Alberta locals and our staff in the province to thank them for their support and their help in this campaign.

While the results were not what we had hoped for, we must learn from this campaign and prepare our locals should the Klein government legislate such votes in other sectors or should the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees embark upon any raiding campaigns in our jurisdiction.
