CUPE 1004, City of Vancouver outside workers unveil commemorative plaque
VANCOUVER— CUPE 1004 members will be joined by Mayor Gregor Robertson at 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 5 at a ceremony in the main council chamber at City Hall to mark the 100th anniversary of services provided by Vancouver’s outside workers.
CUPE 1004 president Mike Jackson notes that members of the Local take great pride in providing services to Vancouver residents. “We are proud of the work we have done with the City and our relationship that helps make Vancouver a great place to live. Public infrastructure like roads, sidewalks, water and sewer – and all the many services the public relies on every day – takes a commitment from both the City and CUPE 1004 members.”
CUPE 1004 is planning various events throughout the year to celebrate 100 years of public service in Vancouver.
Jackson notes, “Stephen Lewis said that ‘Public services pave the way for humanity.’ We are proud to help do that in Vancouver.”
CUPE 1004 represents 2,500 members who provide clean water and safe sanitary systems, repair potholes, sidewalks and streets, maintain parks and facilities, collect garbage and recycling, and maintain Vancouver’s landfill. CUPE 1004 also represents members who work at the PNE, Easy Park (Parking Corporation of Vancouver), the Downtown Eastside Residents Association (DERA), PHS Community Services Society (formerly Portland Hotel Society), Co-Development Canada and the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators (FPSE), Capilano Students’ Union and staff from various college and university faculty associations.
