In 2021, national convention delegates adopted CUPE’s Anti-Racism Strategy. Everyone has a part to play in reaching the strategy’s 10 goals. Here are some ideas to get you started.

“A deal is a deal, and we will do everything in our power to hold you to this deal.” This is the promise future CUPE national president Paul Moist made to Winnipeg City Council in 1996, when they announced they planned to open up the CUPE 500 collective agreement to roll back city worker wages. The largest strike in Saskatchewan’s history, at the time, took place in 1994 when 2,300 municipal workers from four CUPE locals, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) formed the Common Front to put pressure on Saskatoon City Council after two and a half years of bargaining.

Our National Executive Board met in Ottawa June 13-15, 2023, with some members joining virtually. These are the highlights of their deliberations and decisions.

Remember that epic 2021 strike where CUPE NB showed the government just how powerful workers can be? Well, there’s another incredible strike you might have forgotten. Let’s rewind to 30 years ago when our fiery New Brunswick division made the government blink.

June is Pride Month. In celebration of the hard-fought civil and human rights victories that Pride represents, the members of the National Library Workers’ Committee and the National Pink Triangle Committee have produced a bilingual reading list of 2SLGBTQI+ titles for all ages.

With every convention held in-person for the first time since 2019, it was an important opportunity for members to reconnect with each other and their union. There was a great energy that came from that reconnection, along with enormous shows of solidarity and passion and respectful debate. In my address to each convention, I acknowledged that our members, and workers generally, are tired, stressed, and frustrated. This is in part because our public services have been starved of resources and cannot keep up with demand, and because of staffing shortages caused by demographics and a lack of foresight and action by employers and governments.

The second quarter of 2023 has been as busy as it always is with spring Division conventions. This year, with our first full round of in-person conventions since 2019, it has been wonderful to see members in person again, and to hear first-hand about all the amazing work happening in your regions. There are so many creative campaigns and efforts underway in your regions.
