CUPE was born in 1963 out of a merger between the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) and the National Union of Public Service Employees (NUPSE). But this merger was far from easy, as those involved were trying to bring together two very different union cultures. Negotiations leading to the merger lasted six years.

In this video, two of the pillars of our union talk about the process and the difficulties that lead to the merger into CUPE. Kealey Cummings, former CUPE Secretary-Treasurer, and Gil Levine, former CUPE Director of Research, shared facts and thoughts with the delegates of CUPE’s 40th anniversary Convention, in 2003.

Our union stands on the shoulders of these giants, and this video is a must-see for anyone interested in our history.
