Across Canada, housing is becoming more and more expensive, and public housing wait lists stretch for years. While working people struggle to keep up with rising mortgage or rent payments, for-profit developers are pocketing millions of dollars in federal support, with no requirements to build affordable units. These developers are taking public money to build homes that CUPE members and our communities can’t afford.
CUPE members see the impacts of these failed market policies every day. In homeless shelters, long-term care homes, and other public health and social services, our members provide front-line support to some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Only direct public intervention in the housing market can right the ship.
Housing is a human right. Public money should be spent on the public good, not on making private corporations richer. CUPE is calling on the government to tackle the housing crisis by making significant investments in public housing. By targeting federal spending on public housing projects, we can ensure everyone has an affordable and dignified home.
