CUPE National President Mark Hancock has joined leaders of three other national unions in calling on Prime Minister Carney and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand to take immediate action to end the genocide in Gaza.

The letter calls on Canada to take immediate steps to ensure Israeli authorities stop blocking access to aid as Gaza teeters on the brink of famine, and to impose a two-way arms embargo on Israel. The letter also calls on Carney to recognize a Palestinian state immediately and without conditions.

“Massacre after massacre is being livestreamed before us. Bombs being dropped on schools, civilian homes and hospitals, and children being dismembered and left ‘with no surviving family,’ is a daily occurrence,” reads the letter. “There is no justification for this collective punishment or this level of violence and destruction. As leaders on the world stage, your actions have an impact.”
