New Labour Force Survey exposes equity gaps

The Labour Force Survey, carried out monthly by Statistics Canada, recently expanded the demographic data they collect to improve our understanding of employment equity, and specifically to address gaps for Black and racialized workers.

Provincial finances improve, but spending does not

The financial situation for the provinces improved dramatically over the past year. When added together, 2021 provincial budget forecasts estimated a total deficit of $76 billion for the 2021 fiscal year. But the 2022 provincial budgets revealed that actual deficits for 2021 were only $24 billion.

Two important victories for CUPE in pay equity at UQTR

CUPE, through its job evaluation program, has just won two important pay equity victories at the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières. CUPE 1800 and CUPE 2661 represent approximately 800 members, including 400 support staff.

Fair taxes and municipal revenues

Local governments in Canada continue to face growing demand for services that outstrips their ability to raise revenues. Federal support for infrastructure investments helps, but it only goes so far. Ultimately, other sustainable and permanent progressive revenue sources are needed.
