Workplace surveys are powerful tools that help to gather evidence about the psychological health and safety conditions that our members face daily. When done properly, these assessments reveal both risk factors and organizational strengths we can build upon. These assessments are frequently performed using psychosocial hazard assessment survey tools.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing 800,000 workers across Canada, stands in full solidarity with CUPE members Mskwaasin Agnew (CUPE 7797) and Sadie Mees (CUPE 2329) who were aboard the Freedom Flotilla and were detained this week by Israeli authorities.

CUPE’s biannual Health and Safety Forum brought together activists and members to focus on building healthier, safer workplaces with a special emphasis on psychological health and mental well-being.

CUPE proudly presented the 2025 National Health and Safety Award to Jason Ramsey of CUPE 4400, recognizing over a decade of outstanding leadership in making workplaces safer for tens of thousands of education workers in his local and across the sector.

CUPE members who work in social services and community-based organizations are well-trained, compassionate individuals who are committed to delivering high quality services and support programs. They work with individuals who are in crisis and have challenging and aggressive behaviours, multiple diagnoses, and histories of violence. All individuals deserve care and support, but those services cannot be provided at the expense of workers’ health and safety. Workplace violence and harassment should not be viewed as an inevitable part of the work that social service workers perform.

CUPE recognizes that housing is a fundamental human right and has called on the government to prioritize non-market housing solutions by making significant investments in social housing. CUPE has also urged the federal government to make sure the National Housing Strategy is on track to secure adequate housing for all people living in Canada. Unfortunately, homeless encampments (tents and non-permanent structures) have become common in communities across Canada as the housing crisis has continued to worsen over the last few years. Many CUPE members are now being required to dismantle and remove the material that is left behind once the residents have been removed.
