We are now in the second year of the pandemic and I continue to be inspired by the never-ending commitment shown by CUPE members and staff across the country. CUPE’s dedication to deliver first rate public services and other supports to our communities, reflects the critical importance of our work.

CUPE’s approximately 170,000 members in the municipal sector work in water, roads, planning, public health, childcare and more. They make up just over 20% of CUPE’s membership and are identified primarily as “inside” or “outside” workers. CUPE municipal members do work that touches the lives of most Canadians every day – from waste removal to snow removal to water treatment.

This fall has been incredibly busy. In-person events have continued to increase, and it has been wonderful to see so many members again after more than two years of gathering mostly online. It’s clear that we all needed these in-person connections to fuel our ongoing work together as a union and a movement. I am proud CUPE continues to prioritize the health and safety of members and staff as we learn to adjust to the ongoing pandemic, with COVID-19 policies that follow recommendations from scientists and public health.

The federal government is making three changes to Employment Insurance (EI) in order to support workers in the context of a US tariff war. These changes eliminate the one-week waiting period before workers can collect EI, stop severance and vacation pay affecting EI benefits, and make it easier for workers to qualify for EI. A more detailed description of the changes is included below.

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to implement a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada, to take effect as soon as March 5th, with the rates being 25% on most goods and 10% on energy.
