February 28, 2000, Saanich On Saturday Saanich School support staff voted an overwhelming 90% in favour of taking strike action should that action become necessary. In Saanich as elsewhere in the province it has become evident that the local school district cannot come to an agreement on the key issues of job security, pay equity, benefits, and pensions.

Local president Kathryn Farr said, “My members are clearly just as upset and frustrated with this process as their bargaining committee. Their support to the bargaining committee to do what has to be done to get a contract is rewarding. They know we will deal judiciously with their trust.”

Local 441 Saanich Schools is one of 47 members of the CUPE K-12 Sectoral Bargaining Committee.

Gary Johnson, CUPE national representative and SBC co-ordinator said, “Saanich joins the other Vancouver and Gulf Island school locals, as well as locals throughout the province, who are taking strike votes to tell their individual and collective employers to get on with resolving the labour relations problems in the K-12 sector.”
