CUPE 2 stands in solidarity with the ATU 113 member who was stabbed yesterday while on duty at Dundas station. The local, which represents electrical and trades workers at the Toronto Transit Commission, TTC, also extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of the ATU 113 member who tragically lost their life this week in a non-work-related violent incident.
“These incidents are heartbreaking for the entire transit community,” said Sumit Guleria, president of CUPE 2. “Transit workers should be safe at work and safe in their communities. Our thoughts are with our colleagues in ATU 113 during this difficult time.”
CUPE 2 has also seen an increase in concerning incidents involving its own members, including harassment and physical aggression while electrical and trades workers perform essential duties.
In 2023, the TTC and the City of Toronto introduced a series of new safety measures, including expanded support for vulnerable individuals, additional Community Safety Ambassadors, and specialized training for security staff and supervisors.
“We welcome these steps from the TTC, but more is needed,” said Guleria. “Our members need a system-wide approach that ensures every worker can do their job safely and every TTC rider can feel safe on public transit. We’re ready to work with the TTC to make these broader improvements a reality.”
