As people across Saskatchewan share pranks and laughter for April Fools’ Day, CUPE health care workers are highlighting the biggest joke of all: they haven’t seen a wage increase in three years.

For the past two years, CUPE health care workers have been working without a contract while the government drags its feet at the bargaining table. The last wage increase seen by health care providers was on April 1, 2022.

“Our members are on the front lines every day caring for patients, keeping hospitals running, and ensuring quality health care for Saskatchewan residents,” said Kent Peterson, president of CUPE Saskatchewan. “Meanwhile, Scott Moe and the Sask Party government refuses to come to the table with a fair deal that includes meaningful wage increases. It’s beyond frustrating—it’s disrespectful.”

Health care workers in Saskatchewan have faced increased workloads, staffing shortages, and rising costs of living, all without a fair wage adjustment. While the government continues to delay, workers are being pushed to their limits.

“It’s time for the provincial government to stop stalling and negotiate a fair contract with health care workers,” said Bashir Jalloh, president of CUPE 5430 and the union representing over 14,000 health care providers in Saskatchewan. “Our members deserve respect and that starts with wages that reflect their hard work and dedication.”

CUPE is calling on the government to return to the bargaining table and negotiate a fair deal that includes real wage increases for health care workers. Enough is enough—health care workers deserve better.
