This week, we pay tribute to all nurses and we call on governments at every level to do the same, by adopting policies that respect and support nurses and front-line health care workers.
The COVID pandemic brought a greater public appreciation of the work done by nurses and all health care workers. Rightfully, they are recognized as heroes. Nurses continue to provide quality care in hospitals, long-term care homes, community organizations and patients’ homes in the aftermath.
Canada’s health care system depends on the commitment and work of registered practical nurses (RPNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and registered nurses (RNs). But Canada is facing a crisis in hiring and retaining nurses.
To address this crisis, governments must increase staffing levels and reduce workloads. They must provide the higher wages and improved benefits nurses deserve. And they must strive to build a healthier and safer workplace.
Governments must also stop the drive to privatize our public system. In Canada’s health care system, the needs and well-being of patients must come before corporate profits.
As CUPE members, we will continue to fight for better and expanded public services that meet the health care needs of the public and provide good jobs for nurses and all health care workers. We must ensure minimum standards and hours of care in long-term care facilities. We must also recognize the full scope of practice, and make sure all members of the health care team are recognized.
