Petition body
I am writing today to express my concern with the provincial budget. The Sask Party government’s cuts to public services, to public sector organizations and the closure of the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) will have devastating consequences for working families in this province. This mean-spirited budget means that hundreds of cancer patients no longer have STC to get to medical appointments. Our children will lose support in the classroom with education cuts. This government had choices and it chose to hurt working families and reward corporations and high income earners with tax cuts. The government could have decided to support public services and diversify the economy without making draconian cuts. This budget takes money out of working families’ pockets. The increase and expansion of the PST disproportionately hurts lower income people. Families will also be paying more out of their pockets for services that used to be provided by the public sector, like the hearing aid plan or podiatry services; their property taxes will go up because of provincial cuts to municipalities. Public sector workers did not create the deficit and we should not be asked to cut our wages to pay for the government’s mismanagement of finances during a boom. Our wages have not kept up with inflation and now we are threatened with layoffs. The draconian cuts in this budget will make the province’s economic situation worse because of reduced spending in the economy. I urge you to vote against this budget and restore funding to public services.
