CUPE 4600, CUPE 2626 and Campus United will welcome Wisconsin student activist Peter Rickman to Ottawa on Tuesday, June 14 for a presentation about the recent Wisconsin protests and the increasing threat of university campus privatization.
For three weeks in February and March, hundreds of Wisconsinites occupied the state legislature, while outside thousands more protested a Budget Repair Bill that threatened to severely limit public employees’ right to collective bargaining.
Led by 28-year-old Rickman, university students and teachers were among the first to enter and occupy the state building. Quickly joined by other union members and supporters, the protests earned international attention and sent a strong message about the importance of collective bargaining rights.
A graduate law student studying the labour movement and strategic organizing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Rickman serves in several leadership roles in Wisconsin labour organizations.
He was a founding member of the organizing committee for We Are Wisconsin, a statewide community-labour alliance, and a co-founder of the Labor & Working Class Studies Project, a community-labour-campus program for academic and popular education.
His academic work focuses on the labour movement, the practices of unions as social movement actors, and strategic organizing.
