Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Many of you had the privilege, at the CUPE Convention, to hear the heartfelt plea of Stephen Lewis for help in the fight against HIV/AIDS. He, as the UN Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa, has seen this horrific plague first hand. The World knows what to do about AIDS. We simply have to join forces to make resources available to those in need. Stephen Lewis has established a foundation to help do that. A brochure on the Foundation is attached. See the kind of projects they have supported.
As well, the International Labour Movement will launch (Dec. 1, 2003) a global campaign to urge unions to become active on this issue.
The Canadian Labour Congress has already established an HIV/AIDS Labour Fund to coordinate efforts in Canada. The Fund supports HIV/AIDS projects from worker organizations which focus on workers and their families.
AIDS is killing millions of workers, and thereby, destroying the economies of countries by drastically reducing the labour force in developing nations.
Why is AIDS a workplace issue? Because AIDS affects workers rights and productivity. Because we in the workplace have an important role to play in the fight to limit the spread and impact of this disease.
Find out what you and your local can do to play a part in addressing this modern day plague both here and around the World.
Attached are two brochures to help you do that. One is on the Stephen Lewis Foundation, the other is about the CLC HIV/AIDS Labour Fund.
Be Part of the Solution!
