Two CUPE locals in Manitoba’s Sunrise school division voted to strike this week as the aftermath of amalgamations has aggravated negotiations.
“The trustees voted themselves an increase of over 200% in their annual honoraria, but they won’t equalize wage differences forced on us by amalgamation,” said President Jackie Hampshire whose members gave CUPE local 1618 a strike mandate this week.
Most of the issues in the dispute involve equalizing wages and benefits between workers who used to have different employers.
Said Local 4456 president Charmaine Hrysio, “We’re not getting fair treatment when it comes to resolving the wage differences and the members have made it clear they’ll strike if necessary to get a fair deal.”
Both locals have applied for conciliation.
