Employees of a Labrador women’s shelter say they’ll fight layoff notices issued last week after the shelter’s board of directors resigned.

The 16 members of CUPE Local 1860?03 in Happy Valley-Goose Bay intend to work with the community, women’s groups and other allies to reopen the Libra House shelter, which closed November 29.

CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador president Wayne Lucas says, Libra House has been a leader in the struggle against violence toward women and children and it is sadly ironic that on the 13th anniversary of the slaying of 14 women at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal we have to argue for our very existence.
