Montra006c, Thursday, August 29, 2002 – The Canadian Union of Public Employees rejects and condemns the acts of vandalism committed against fifty or so Desjardins automatic banking machines last night. No reason whatsoever can explain or justify such acts. The on-going labour dispute at Sc0075r can only be settled through collective bargaining and a determination on the part of both sides to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.

CUPE is asking all Sc0075r union members to remain calm and to continue acting in a responsible, public-spirited manner, as they have done since the start of this difficult labour dispute. It is important to keep in mind that the two parties are still meeting and bargaining talks continue. In fact, since 11:00 a.m. today, union representatives are engaged in intensive negotiations with the employer in the presence of a mediator. For CUPE, negotiations are still the priority and the only winning strategy.

With close to 100,000 members in Qub0065c, CUPE is present in many sectors of work, including health care and social services, education, universities, municipalities, public utilities, urban and air transportation, communications and Qub0065c government corporations and public agencies. It is the largest of the unions affiliated with the FTQ.
