Workers at the Selkirk-St. Andrews Regional Library north of Winnipeg went back to work just before Christmas after reaching an agreement with the employer to end the month-long strike.
Job security was the only issue in the strike, after the employer refused to renew a letter of understanding ensuring job protection. Proving that fighting back works, the letter has now been renewed and workers received added protection ensuring that where hours are reduced, existing workers would have hours restored before new employees are hired.
“We fought for staffing levels necessary to provide a quality public service to our city. And we obtained language that stops the employer hiring new people after cutting our hours. We won,” said Pat Cordner, President of CUPE Local 336.
