Petition body
Dear Councillor, On September 22, the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee will decide whether to keep garbage collection east of Yonge Street public. I strongly oppose privatizing any more of the city’s solid waste collection services, and urge you to maintain existing public solid waste collection. Since privatization, complaints have increased dramatically, and the true costs have not been properly assessed. The public sector track record is clear. City-delivered solid waste services are more accountable, faster, and better able to meet our environmental goals. Maintaining public garbage collection east of Yonge means the city can hold the private sector to our current high standards. Any further contracting out gives the private sector too much control over this vital service. If the city becomes dependent on private contractors, the result will be higher contract costs and lower-quality, less reliable services. Experience west of Yonge as well as of our neighbours in York Region shows that privatization means lower-quality solid waste services. In addition to higher quality service, public solid waste collection gives us the control and flexibility to meet and expand the city’s long-term environmental goals. Finally, solid waste collection is a dirty and dangerous job. The people doing these jobs deserve a fair wage and decent benefits. This will not be the case if there is further contracting out. Once we lose the trucks, staff and infrastructure, they are gone forever. If privatization goes badly, there’s no turning back. It’s too big a risk, and too high a price to pay. I urge you to keep Toronto’s solid waste services green, reliable and accountable – keep them public. Thank you. c.c. Mayor John Tory
