Brock University’s ESL department is highly important to Brock, delivering popular programs that attract students from around the globe. CUPE 4207 members, who are highly-qualified and dedicated professionals, deliver the ESL programs that help international students integrate into the Brock curriculum. These international students pay high tuition fees to benefit from the skills and experience of CUPE 4207 members. While Brock’s administration seems to recognize the importance of the ESL programs and values the high revenue generated by the program and, in fact, plans to grow and invest in the ESL programs – the same administration is refusing to recognize the very people, the ESL instructors, that built and deliver the ESL curriculum – by refusing to offer them a fair contract. It is time for Brock to invest in the professionals who are the true builders of the ESL program. Without the front-line ESL instructors that the students rely on, the program will not be what it is today. I am writing to urge you to fully recognize and invest in the ESL instructors that are the backbone of the ESL program. Offer them a fair contract so they can continue to build the ESL programs that helped put Brock University on the radar for the many international students enrolled in Brock.
