Petition body
I am writing to you in support of more than 350 Trent employees: teaching assistants, lab assistants, academic assistants and student markers who are the university’s student workforce. With a strike deadline looming as early as 27 February, I want to address the university’s administration directly about the perilous state of negotiations between CUPE and Trent. Simply put, the student-workers of CUPE 3908 cannot afford to accept the deal that Trent has offered. The deal currently on the table is not fair, just or far-sighted and it does not reflect the valuable contribution that student-workers make to university life. I realize that Ontario funds post-secondary education at a rate that is 34 per cent lower than other provinces. And yet I can’t agree that the lowest paid and most vulnerable university employees should be made to pay the price for this underfunding. In fact, a reasonable settlement could be reached for less than one-tenth of one per cent of Trent’s $100 million operating budget. And since student-workers make a direct contribution to Trent’s coffers through the tuition they pay and the government grants they attract, their wage demands are essentially self-financing. That is why I am joining my voice to those who are calling for a fair, negotiated settlement for Trent’s student employees
