Yesterday evening, the City of Mercier and the union representing firefighters in the City of Mercier – CUPE 7103, signed a new collective agreement covering the period from 2019 to 2029. This brings nearly eight years of bargaining to a close, as the last contract ended on December 31, 2018.
“Our members have been waiting for a renewed collective agreement for a very long time. At the end of this challenging process, this agreement recognizes their contribution and allows us to pursue our mission in a renewed framework, while facilitating a constructive dialogue with the city. This shows that a negotiated solution is always possible, even in the face of acrimony, obstacles and the feelings that can arise during such a long period of working without a contract,” added Jean-Julien Mercier, CUPE representative.
Today’s signing brings an end to nearly eight years of working without a renewed collective agreement. It formalises working conditions for the twenty-eight members of the firefighting unit for the period covering 2019 to 2029, and gives an opportunity to both the city and the union to turn the page on this endless cycle of bargaining.
Since the last contract expired, both parties took part in a long bargaining process in order to reach a balanced agreement. The exceptionally long period of negotiations speaks to the complexity of the issues being dealt with and shows the determination and perseverance of the bargaining teams, and their willingness to find common ground. The ministry of Labour’s mediation services were called upon on three occasions during the discussions, to help bring the employer and union closer to a mutual understanding.
“We must not forget that beyond fighting fires, our members intervene in many different emergency situations, including as first responders during road accidents, incidents of flooding and incidents involving hazardous materials. Their professionalism and their dedication contribute directly to the safety and quality of life of residents,” said Philippe Barrette, vice-president of CUPE 7103, in closing.
