Tomorrow, education workers, parents and CUPE 5335 members will gather in front of the Eastern Ontario Public School Board (EOPSB) office for the trustees’ meeting, to continue opposing the major downsizing, reduced hours of work and job reclassifications that threaten student services and living conditions in schools at all levels.
In April, the members of CUPE 5335 were informed that the CEPEO was planning to cut 25 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions by the end of the school year. In addition, the employer intends to reduce virtually all secretarial positions from 12-month to 10-month assignments, and to eliminate all administrative secretary positions, a move that will have significant repercussions on workers’ incomes, pension contributions and job security.
On Tuesday, CEPEO education workers, parents, partners and supporters will gather in front of the school board offices from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Starting at 5:30 p.m., staff members will storm into the trustees’ meeting to voice their concerns about the impact these decisions will have on CEPEO schools and students.
Local members work as janitors, cleaners, school secretaries, computer technicians, librarians and communications staff, keeping schools clean, operational and safe.
CUPE 5335 encourages parents and families to attend both the rally and the trustees’ meeting to express their concerns about how these budget cuts will affect the CEPEO’s school environment, student services, safety and overall quality of education.
Media are invited to attend the rally and are encouraged to accompany workers and parents to the board meeting.
