Safe Union Spaces Working Group: Final Report
CUPE’s National Executive Board (NEB) formed the Safe Union Spaces Working Group in March 2021. It was established to address serious issues of sexual and gender-based violence, harassment and other forms of discrimination in our union. The working group includes all women who are on the NEB and is supported by senior staff. This report details the progress made so far.

Building a safer and more inclusive CUPE
In March 2021, CUPE’s National Executive Board (NEB) formed the Safe Union Spaces Working Group (SUSWG). The group, made up of the women members of the NEB, conducted member surveys, held focus groups and organized listening sessions, and collaborated with experts to determine next steps. They outlined their recommendations in an interim report and action plan, published in April 2022. Since then, CUPE has been putting these recommendations into practice. Here are some highlights!

Safe Union Spaces initiatives roll out
CUPE’s National Executive Board (NEB) created the Safe Union Spaces Working Group (SUSWG) in March 2021. The working group, made up of the women members of the NEB, was formed in response to serious misconduct in our union. Since the release of its first interim report last spring, the SUSWG has continued its work to transform how CUPE addresses sexual and gender-based violence and other forms of harassment and discrimination in union spaces.

Today, delegates heard about the work that has been done so far by CUPE’s Safe Spaces Working Group. Created by the National Executive Board to address serious concerns about gender-based violence and other forms of harassment and discrimination in our union, the working group – made up of the women members of the NEB – was created to ensure that CUPE has the necessary tools, policies, practices and processes to create safe spaces for all members and at all levels of the union.

New National Working Group: Safe Union Spaces
At its meeting in March, CUPE’s National Executive Board NEB discussed gender-based violence and other forms of harassment and discrimination occurring in our union. In response to these serious and ongoing concerns, the NEB passed a motion to create a National Safe Union Spaces Working Group, comprised of women members of the NEB.
