Sid Ryan to lead school board workers’ rally Saturday

Guelph, Ont. – CUPE Ontario president Sid Ryan will lead a solidarity rally to support the Upper Grand District School Board workers’ campaign against the board’s plans to contract out maintenance work at schools in Guelph and Wellington County. The rally will take place at Willow Road Public School, 125 Willow Road, Guelph at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 12th.

Sid Ryan will join Janice Folk-Dawson, chair of CUPE Ontario University Workers Coordinating Committee, to support CUPE 256 members and raise awareness of the workers’ campaign against the board’s contracting out plans.

CUPE Local 256 represents over 233 custodial, trades and maintenance workers. The 14 workers affected by the board’s contracting out plans include eight grounds crew, six painters and two warehouse workers. They perform maintenance duties, including snow removal, grounds maintenance, painting and facilities set-up in local schools in Guelph and Wellington County.
