The Provincial Executive of the Hospital Employees’ Union has decided not to reappoint
secretary-business manager Chris Allnutt when his term expires at the union’s biennial
convention this October.

In the meantime, Allnutt is on a leave of absence and Zorica Bosancic, the union’s assistant
secretary-business manager, will assume his responsibilities.

“Chris has provided dedicated and able leadership through some of our union’s most
challenging and difficult years,” says HEU president Fred Muzin. “Now our union is entering
a new phase.

“This fall, convention delegates and the new provincial executive they elect will chart the
future of our union.”

HEU financial secretary Mary LaPlante says that under Allnutt’s leadership the union has
remained on a stable footing despite unprecedented government attacks that have resulted in
massive job losses for union members.

“When convention delegates gather this fall, they can begin a new chapter in the union’s
history knowing that HEU is fiscally sound and continues to provide a high level of service
to its 40,000 members,” says LaPlante.

Under HEU’s constitution, delegates to the biennial convention must ratify a decision of the
provincial executive appointing the secretary-business manager.

The secretary-business manager is the chief administrative officer and spokesperson for the
union and sits as a member of the union’s provincial executive.

Allnutt has worked for the HEU since 1989 and was appointed secretary-business manager in 1996.
