Statement on major federal child care announcement from CUPE Saskatchewan President Kent Peterson

“On Friday, the federal government announced additional child care funding. This is promising for the many families, workers, and centres across Saskatchewan – especially at a time when Scott Moe’s damaging cuts are about to take effect with serious consequences.

“But this funding will only make a difference if it reaches the people who need it. Scott Moe must ensure these dollars are properly invested in strengthening child care in Saskatchewan.

“At a time when there are not enough spaces to meet demand, and staffing shortages are already a challenge, Scott Moe announced devastating child care cuts – funding reductions through the elimination of space maximization, freezing the creation of new child care spaces, restricting tuition-free training for early childhood educators, and introducing extended hours fees that will cost families more.

“CUPE Saskatchewan is calling on Scott Moe to stop these harmful cuts and make meaningful investments in a child care system that supports workers, families, and communities.”

CUPE is Saskatchewan’s child care union, representing more than 300 child care workers across the province and more than 12,000 across the country.
