EDMONTON – The President of CUPE Alberta is calling on Health Minister Sarah Hoffman to make hospital laboratory services publicly delivered.
CUPE Alberta President Marle Roberts made the request as the Alberta government re-considers a decision by the previous PC government to grant Australian based Sonic Labs a contract to run lab services privately. Previously, Alberta hospitals have used a mix of private labs run by Dynalife, and publicly run labs operated by Covenant Health and AHS. The previous PC governments’ actions would further privatize hospital lab services already dominated by private interests.
“Privately run health care delivers poorer quality services at a higher costs,” said Roberts. “Please reverse course for the sake of patients and taxpayers.”
“CUPE has advocated for years that lab services should be funded publicly and run publicly. The switching of lab services to various private companies results in higher costs to the public.”
CUPE has set up an online campaign for the public to send a letter to the government.
