CUPE 47 ratifies new agreement after strong show of solidarity

Members of CUPE 47 have ratified a new agreement with the City of Saskatoon. The vote took place on August 4, 2026.

The agreement follows a difficult round of bargaining that included reaching impasse and CUPE 47 members delivering a strong strike mandate.

“This was a tough round of bargaining, but our members stood behind our bargaining committee, and we were able to stave off concessions while making some gains,” said Susan Dobrowney, president of CUPE 47 and a member of the bargaining committee.

Highlights of the five-year agreement include:

  • 13.5% increase over five and a half years
  • New family illness leave language, two days of accumulated sick leave
  • Two days of unpaid leave to participate in a recognized ceremonial, cultural, or spiritual event
  • 10 cent increase each year for shift differential and weekend premium
  • $3 per hour market adjustment for trades classifications

The agreement also maintains existing health and safety language, negotiated schedules and the clothing allowance, which were proposed concessions by the employer in bargaining.

“CUPE 47 members provide water and wastewater services that people count on every day,” said Kent Peterson, president of CUPE Saskatchewan. “They stayed strong, united and through that solidarity secured a good agreement that recognizes the value of their work.”

CUPE 47 represents approximately 130 City of Saskatoon water and wastewater treatment workers who provide safe drinking water and wastewater treatment services relied on by more than one-third of Saskatchewan residents.
