CUPE Quebec wrapped up its convention in Quebec City with elections that led to a partial change in leadership at the helm of the division representing 143,000 workers across the province.

“I’m honoured, and I pledge to fight for the important issues we’re facing,” said newly elected General Secretary Fanny Demontigny, formerly president of the Conseil provincial des affaires sociales, CPAS. “The rise of right-wing conservatives and the various threats to our public services must be taken seriously. We need a strong, united labour response.”

Delegates also voted for the CUPE Quebec presidency. Patrick Gloutney was re-elected after a contested race against David Clément, president of the SQDC workers’ union.

“Union democracy matters,” said re-elected President Patrick Gloutney. “This vote reminds us to never take anything for granted and to never give up. Thank you, delegates, for your renewed support.”

On Monday, more than 700 delegates gathered at the Quebec City Convention Centre for CUPE Quebec’s 34th biennial convention to debate social and union issues and set priorities for the next two years.

The convention theme—”Save our public services”—was amplified by a large rally outside Quebec’s National Assembly yesterday.

“This week, we are reminding everyone that public services - too often undermined by our governments – are the foundation of Quebec society and must be defended with strength and determination.”
