Union Education is grateful to you for sharing your experience and knowledge as Indigenous workers and allies in CUPE. This project was born from Resolution 61 (below) submitted by CUPE’s national Indigenous council and passed by National Convention 2021.
Over two days we will have discussions, try our workshops activities, explore ideas and learn together. Here is the schedule:
• 8:45am: Gather
• 9:00am: Start in a circle
• 12:00pm: Lunch (provided)
• 1:00pm: Resume
• 4:30pm: Close
Resolution 61. CUPE NATIONAL WILL:
1. Lobby the federal government to:
• Identify and close the gaps in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities,
• publish annual progress reports, and
• assess long-term trends; provide sustainable funding for existing and new Indigenous healing centres to address harms caused by residential schools and colonization.
2. Urge all levels of government to increase the number of Indigenous professionals working in health care.
3. Ensure all CUPE staff, locals and members in the health sector take yearly Indigenous cultural safety, anti-oppression, and anti-Indigenous racism trainings, create a database to track trainings and report back every year.
4. Call on medical and nursing schools to require all students to take courses on Indigenous health issues, including intercultural competency, anti-oppression, and anti-Indigenous racism.
