Human Rights Days
October 21 (9:00am) - 24, 2024 (12:00pm)

This workshop will be for those who want to learn more about human rights in Canada from a CUPE and workplace perspective. Anti-oppression and anti-racism work is inherent in CUPE’s commitment to equity-seeking and equity-deserving members. In 2021, CUPE’s annual convention passed a resolution that commits our union to develop and support anti-racism strategies and work. Please join us to take your next steps for equality and human rights within our locals and our communities. - Anti-oppression / Anti-racism; - Safer Spaces for Two Spirit, Trans, and non-binary workers; and - Essentials for Inclusive Unions.

Fundamentals of Labour Law
October 21 (9:00am) - 24, 2024 (12:00pm) (20 spaces available)

In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of labour law as they apply to unionized workplaces in Saskatchewan. Topics will include what locals and activists need to know about The Saskatchewan Employment Act, the union and employer’s duty to accommodate, and the duty of fair representation. Law, case decisions, and other jurisprudence will be discussed and reviewed, so participants can begin to understand more deeply their roles in the union legal framework and landscape. Pre-requisite: Introduction to Stewarding (available online, Parts I and II, or live.)

These workshops are from CUPE’s renowned Steward Learning Series, and are for both newly-elected union stewards/officers and executive members of longer standing who wish to review and hone their skills. All workshop attendees will be credited for these workshops in our Steward Learning Series Passport program. - Representing Members in Front of Management; - Handling Discipline and Discharge; - Notetaking; - Disability and Ablism in the Workplace; - Ally Skills for Stewards; and - Creating Harassment-Free Workplaces. Pre-requisite: Introduction to Stewarding (available online, Parts I and II, or live.) Please bring your Steward handbook, Steward passport and a copy of your collective agreement.

SLS - Growing our mobilizing power

Stewards can play a key role when the union needs to mobilize our members – whether it’s to support the bargaining committee, or stop the employer’s attempt to contract out our work. Learn basic mobilization theory and explore how stewards can tackle workplace problems in ways that engage more members and build the union’s power.

SLS - Representing members in front of management

This module equips stewards to be proactive when meeting with management. Learn tips for effective meetings, and build confidence by practicing meeting situations.

SLS - Creating accommodation-friendly workplaces
Oct 22, 2024 (9:00am-12:00pm (Saskatchewan))

Learn the legal framework for the duty to accommodate, what a good accommodation process and plan look like, and what to do if the employer is not willing to provide reasonable accommodation. NOTE: Please bring your Steward Handbook to the workshop.

SLS - HS - Preventing Mental Injuries at Work

New forms of work, job insecurity, work intensification, high demands, violence and a resulting poor work-life balance are resulting in psychosocial and mental health problems in CUPE workplaces. This module focuses on the workplace as the cause or a contributor to mental health issues, and not the individual. Discuss strategies and actions that actually help make workplaces psychologically healthier and safer.

SLS - Conflict skills for stewards

Unresolved workplace conflict is stressful and weakens the union. Learn about the sources of workplace conflict and how to choose a response that fits the situation. Practice conflict communication skills that will help you resolve conflict at work and in the union.

SLS - Understanding mental health

Explore the steward’s role in supporting and representing members dealing with mental health issues. Learn how to challenge stigma, and how to approach a conversation with a member about a possible mental health issue.
