The members of CUPE 2977 are proud of the work they do, empowering and supporting people with developmental disabilities. They are personal support workers, chefs, life coaches, and more. But management has created such a toxic work environment, workers are paid so poorly, and morale is so low that workers are being chased from jobs they love.

These workers are regularly hit, bitten, and abused. Yet they leave work and too often have to go to a second job – or line up at a food bank. Management, meanwhile, has received awards for safety and worker treatment.

This hypocrisy must end. These workers deserve a fair deal. They deserve wages that allow them to support their families, an employer who takes their safety seriously, and end to a two-tier benefit scheme that treats workers unequally. That is the only way to ensure that the people who rely on them receive the highest quality care.
