Commemorating international women’s day in Honduras is part of the work that a group of trade union activists will do as part of a delegation with CoDevelopment Canada to Nicaragua and Honduras. The delegation will also commemorate the 20th anniversary of MEC, a Nicaraguan project partner of CUPE’s Global Justice fund.

The delegation is being hosted by Global Justice Fund partners Maria Elena Cuadra Movement of Employed and Unemployed Women in Nicaragua (MEC) and Honduran Women’s Collective (CODEMUH). The visit will coincide with MEC’s 20th anniversary, and they will celebrate International Women’s Day in Honduras with CODEMUH.

Sisters Dianne Frittenburg (CUPE 1933) and Joelle Ravary (CUPE 1500) are members of the CUPE National Women’s Committee and represent CUPE on this delegation. The delegation will meet with workers in maquila zones and will hear first hand accounts of the conditions and struggle of women in the precarious garment sectors in both countries. How women in Nicaragua and Honduras fight back against these conditions has been a source of inspiration for CUPE members for many years, and we continue to look for ways we can politically and financially support their struggles.
