CUPE is mourning the loss of Ed Broadbent, a progressive giant and a lifelong champion for workers’ rights and social democracy in Canada.

As a political leader, Ed paved the way for progressive inroads in Canada’s Parliament, leading the NDP to one of its best-ever showings in a federal election in 1988.

As a public policy intellectual, Ed articulated a vision of a progressive Canada that places the dignity and decency of everyday people above all else. His contributions to the growth and development of social democracy in Canada have been foundational - and will continue to inspire generations of thinkers and activists for years to come.

Ed’s incredible legacy will live on through his many works, including the Broadbent Institute which he founded in 2011.

CUPE extends our deepest sympathies to Ed’s family and loved ones, and joins with thousands across Canada who are mourning his passing and celebrating his lifetime of striving for a better future for all people in Canada.
