OTTAWA - CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador President Wayne Lucas is in Ottawa today attending a reception with CUPE National President Paul Moist and Secretary Treasurer Claude Genereux to celebrate the historic election of 103 New Democrats to the House of Commons.

Says Lucas, “I am particularly looking forward to talking to our partners in the NDP about how we can work together to protect the public services all Canadians depend on.

“In light of the back to work legislation against postal workers introduced by the Harper government yesterday and earlier legislation against CAW workers at Air Canada, this government is certainly showing an anti-union and anti-worker bias that should trouble all Canadians,” he says.

I am glad the official opposition is here to defend public services and workers’ rights.  CUPE looks forward to working with them to ensure free collective bargaining is not simply trampled on by this majority government,” says Lucas.
