CORNWALL A union representation vote will be held on May 19, 2004, to allow Cornwall Community hospital workers to choose which union will represent them at the newly merged hospital, says the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). The vote date was agreed to at a Labour Board hearing yesterday. />

CUPE will be campaigning full force to make sure hospital workers have the best possible union representation and thats what CUPE delivers, says CUPE Local 7811 president Allen Renwick, representing service and clerical workers at the 2nd Street site of the hospital. Workers at the former Hotel Dieu site are currently represented by OPSEU. Service and clerical workers at both sites will choose one of the two unions to represent them in the vote.

We look forward to talking with OPSEU members about CUPE and how choosing our union can improve their lives, says Renwick.

CUPE also won a raise of over 2 dollars an hour for CUPE RPNs at Cornwall Community Hospital, after getting the employer to agree to the increase at todays hearing. The raise will be retroactive to September 29th, 2003.

CUPE will run a positive campaign to encourage hospital workers to vote for CUPE, says CUPE Organizer Andr 004camoureux. We are confident that given the facts, hospital workers will choose CUPE hands down.
