BAIE-COMEAU – At a general meeting May 27, the City of Baie-Comeau white collars voted unanimously in support of their bargaining committee. The union felt it was important to update its members on discussions with the employer, ongoing since January.

“We needed to clarify the members’ expectations and ensure that we have their support. We are very pleased that 100% of the workers gave us that support,” said Charlaine Sirois, CUPE union representative.

“We are confident that we can reach an agreement with the employer. That is why we have invited the employer to meet with us to establish the next steps in the negotiation process,” added Sirois.

The Union of Baie-Comeau white collars (CUPE 2641) represents more than 80 workers, including sixty permanent employees. They have been working without a contract since December 31, 2012.

With more than 111,000 members in Quebec, CUPE represents about 70% of the province’s municipal employees, or 30,500 members. CUPE is also present in the following sectors: health and social services, communications, education, universities, energy, Quebec government corporations and public agencies, urban and air transport, and the mixed sector.
