Members of the CUPE Kootenay District Council could not have asked for better weather or a better location for their Mother’s Day weekend celebration. The temperature climbed to the high twenties as local activists from across the Kootenay region set up tables, tents, information and face painting at Creston Regional Library on May 11.
With the CUPE BC community events trailer on-hand to support the event, members served hot dogs, hamburgers and ice-cold drinks to more than 300 local residents attending the event. Surrounded by the stunning beauty of the Selkirk and Purcell Mountains, community members enjoyed a relaxing free family event with their neighbours and friends.
“We were so pleased to host the event at the Creston Regional Library because it is such a vital public service for our community,” said Kootenay District Council President Anne Purvis. “We are thankful to CUPE BC for supporting this event, and to Loblaws Independent Grocer in Creston for sponsoring the food.”
CUPE BC President Paul Faoro attended the event to lend a hand, engage with members, and connect with the community.
“Public engagement is such an important part of what makes our union strong,” said Faoro. “It’s great to see members in the Kootenays taking a leadership role in community outreach and making good use of our community trailer.”

Following the May 11 event in Creston, the CUPE BC community event trailer rolled on to Cranbrook for a barbecue at College of the Rockies, hosted by Local 2773. CUPE locals wishing to book the trailer can fill out the online form at https://www.cupe.bc.ca/community_events_trailer.
