After reporting a massive shortfall in the citys budget, Ottawa officials are looking at major cuts to staff and services and a fresh round of privatization. One proposal is to turn over maintenance of sports fields to sports clubs through a P3 scheme.

Simply put, sports fields will be auctioned off to the highest bidder with the resources to provide maintenance. Small clubs that cant afford to do the work will lose control over scheduling and other priorities.

At the same time, more than 200 municipal workers have been given pink slips while 500 managers are getting bonuses totaling $1.5 million.

CUPE members and community allies are planning a rally on March 4 at city hall to oppose cuts to community services and challenge the move to P3s.
